Cloud computing is here; we all know about it, but when we think about it, we always think it’s about data storage, web hosting, and application development because that’s what cloud computing can do, right? So, what about using computing in research, big data analysis, rendering, and any other complex compute requirements? That’s where HPC( High Performance Computing) comes in. Lots of people don’t know about HPC, and in this article, we are going to dive deeper into what HPC is and why we need it.

What is HPC?

High-performance computing (HPC) can be understood in simple words, like the ability to process big data and perform complex calculations at high speed. To put it into perspective, a laptop or desktop with a 3 GHz processor can perform around 3 billion calculations per second. While that is much faster than any human can achieve, it pales in comparison to HPC solutions that can perform quadrillions of calculations per second.

Why is HPC important?

We all know that everyday technology is improving the lives of every human on earth; we are witnessing groundbreaking discoveries across the world, which is again improving the lives of everyone; we are aware that self-driven cars are becoming reality; we are enjoying high-grade cinema; combining all these, it impacts billions of people around the world; and for these innovations, the foundation layer is HPC; we use it for scientific, industrial, and social advancements, yet we don’t know about it.

As we are moving ahead with technologies like IoT, AI, and 3D, imagining the amount of data organisations we have to process will grow exponentially, including many more things like weather forecasting, big data processing, testing new crucial products, and new medicine development, all of which require highly accurate and real-time data processing, and for these things we need HPC.

Companies need it so that they can be ahead of their competition, and scientists need it so that they can keep their research moving in the right direction.

HPC Use Cases

HPC is used in various industries across the world for their different needs. Here are some popular use cases of HPC.

  • R&D: HPC is used for important research and development things like renewable energy, the space industry, and many other fields that require intense computing power and real-time processing.
  • Cinema:- We all are experiencing high-quality cinema nowadays, which includes animation and 3D movies, which all require high-class rendering visual effects that need to be fast. That’s where we need HPC in the cinema industry.
  • Weather Forecasting: A weather forecast is crucial for everyone as it can help us be prepared for the worst. The two elements of forecasting are getting the forecast right and writing the piece code to get all the input and give accurate information, but the important part is that we need it in real time so that we have enough time to get prepared, and that’s where we need HPC for fast data analysis and real-time processing.
  • AI and Machine Learning: HPC is used for data analysis and decision-making for AI based on the data provided; HPC is used to prevent online fraud; and it is also used in self-driving vehicles.

HPC in Cloud Computing

  • Why we need HPC in the Cloud: HPC in the Cloud computing is the need of the hour, as nowadays companies have to set up HPC facilities for their needs and manage everything from security to maintenance of the setup. It’s way more costlier to set up a HPC facility than we can imagine. So how about accessing HPC like we access cloud computing, paying for what we use?
  • HPC in Cloud Computing: HPC in cloud computing means getting access to high-performance compute whenever we want over the internet, like the services of cloud computing, where on behalf of you, HPC servers will solve your needs.
  • How to use HPC on the cloud: Many cloud providers have started providing HPC over the cloud, and many are planning to start HPC like they provide cloud services. To use HPC, you can contact your provider or search for HPC providers on the internet. Or you can choose CUDOS or CudoCompute, where CUDOS is a decentralised HPC provider.
  • How users will benefit from HPC in the cloud: As everyone will have access to HPC at their fingertips, they can expand their businesses or continue their research without investing heavily in the HPC setup. HPC in the cloud is a financially viable option for everyone for their every need.

Decentralising the HPC with CUDOS

For the time being, cloud HPC is in the hands of centralised players, which raises concerns over privacy. As companies want to use HPC for highly secure research and analytics facilities for themselves, no one should have control over their research, but unfortunately, they have to use centralised providers of HPC services because of a lack of options.

That’s where CUDOS enters. CUDOS is a blockchain-led compute protocol that promotes decentralisation and an open environment in the field of HPC, where anyone from across the world can access it through their CUDOS Blockchain in a decntralised manner.
